Lock, Chalk, and Two Smoking Routes: An Artistic Route Announcement

AS-SBP Airport Route Mural SAN, Portland

The Aviatrix team had an especially good time helping manage the double-route announcement at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. In addition to arranging the more traditional speeches, reception, and media interviews, the airport commissioned a custom art piece that helped share the good news that Alaska Airlines would begin flying to San Diego and Portland, Oregon. The mural made for a creative route announcement that was visual and memorable.

Completed by Rachel Hamann of Dot and Cross Studio, the colorful chalk piece captures the fun of vintage airplane banners. It occupies the large outdoor elevator at the front of the airport, and will be viewed for weeks.

It can be easy to do the same ol’ thing every time your airport has news. The mural was a brilliant way to make the route announcement stand out from the others that the airline was making, and Alaska was fully supportive of the idea.

What’s the most creative airport route announcement you’ve seen?
